GET THIS ALBUM DONE! At least we’re trying, anyway. That’s Nilsey putting his signature licks on our version of “Wind That Shakes The Barley”. He also layed some tracks on “Portrait Of The City (As A Neighborhood)” – which is starting to come together nicely (ignore anything you hear from the Ramblers about the song having been a struggle!). We’re hoping to have the full-length album done before the coveted St. Patrick’s Day season next year. In the meantime, you can catch us doing a brief set at the Double Door this Sunday. We, along with a whopping 14 other bands will be playing a benefit concert for Erik “Hi Fi” Kish. Erik was a good friend of our bass player Sean. Come on out for a good cause!

Ah, yes. Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day. The time of year when we celebrate the 6-month point towards the March, 17th feast. Time to relive a day most had probably forgotten 184 days ago. But before you mock, keep in mind that none of the following holidays celebrate a “half-way” mark: X-mas, Easter, New Years, Flag Day, Take-Your-Daughter-to-Work Day, Boxing Day, Groundhog Day & Festivus.
Come celebrate 1/2 the way to St. Patrick’s Day w/ us @:
7110 North Lincoln Avenue

For a wisened veteran young whippersnapper like myself, every venue played at is usually a first-time experience. The Avondale Ramblers, on the other hand, are a bunch that has “gotten’ around”. It’s been said that they’ve seen the inside of more bars than a Joliet prisoner - serving life! But come September 9th, both I AND the Avondale Ramblers will be hitting Lincoln Hall (2424 Lincoln Ave, Chicago IL) for the 1st time. We’ve heard nothing but great things about the venue and are excited to finally be playing there. If nothing, come just see the spot across the street where gangster John Dillinger was shot before an STD could claim him…

Ode to the summer festival
humid
it is humid
kids runn aimless. Some in strollers, carted
tickets are currency – they are silver, THEY ARE GOLD
sunglassed eyes peer over the pavement
something fried?
“This beer tastes so good,” she says in earnest.
You haven’t seen Tommy since high school..
And the band plays Slow Ride like they never have before…..

St. Patrick’s Day was hell!…..on my voice, that is.. Eleven Ten shows, twenty-one sets and we enjoyed every one of them. Thanks to all of you who came out – and to those of you who didn’t, well, that’s your our loss (I’m liking this “crossing-out” feature). Anyway, KF&AR are currently all locked up inside Million Yen studios and will be for a good portion of the summer and fall – trying to knock out an album AND an EP for release towards the end of this year/beginning of next. Currently, the band is working on “The Road”, “Wind That Shakes the Barley” and “Five Weeks, Five Days”…
That doesn’t mean, however, that you won’t be able to catch us out playing live. Make sure to check out the “Gigs” section for our up and coming shows.
Sláinte!

The following is the first in a series of interviews with members of the Avondale Ramblers called: My Favorite Rambler. They are a soft but subtle portraits of the men behind the “man-with-his-name-in-the-band.” Step inside this intimate conversation with stick-man Frederick Frey.
How long have you been playing the drums for?
This February it will be exactly 20 years. You’d think I’d be a lot better after all that time.
Favorite bands to listen to?
Almost everything I listen to is a guilty pleasure. Everything from 80′s new wave (the Cult, New Order, Sisters Of Mercy) to Scandinavian symphonic metal. I really wish I were kidding about that last one. For the most part I just like anything with solid, simple songwriting.
Favorite KF & AR song?
To listen to, probably “Somethin’s Going Down.” I imagine myself bar fighting in an old-timey saloon. To play, probably “Stand Tall.” I don’t have to sing any backups on that one so I can really concentrate on the drumming.
Most memorable show you’ve played?
The first time I ever played Metro in Chicago. At 19 years old I was pretty sure that it was the end of the line. I’d seen so many great bands there as a teenager and I couldn’t believe I was on the same stage. I was in a super-fast hardcore band and I honestly don’t think I’d be able to play that fast 15 years later.
Your influences:
Drumming-wise I’ve really been influenced by some of the great Chicago punk bands of the 90′s. Better yet, I’ve had a chance to sit down with some of my favorites and learn a thing or two.
Movie or TV show have you seen recently that you would recommend?
After.Life with Liam Neeson and Christina Ricci. It’s dark, scary, suspenseful and Christina Ricci is naked for almost the whole movie.
Favorite whiskey?
I was never much of a whiskey drinker before the Ramblers so my tastes are still developing. Whatever is left in the bottle after Andy Gerber gets a hold of it is good enough for me.
Most memorable moment you’ve had with the band so far?
Probably waking up to a hotel fire alarm on St. Patrick’s Day and saying, “Fuck it”. Then going back to sleep as the entire hotel was evacuated. Drummers are meant to die tragically, after all…

Part 2 in the series of interviews done with Kevin Flynn – by Kevin Flynn
|
Kevin Flynn: Things have been quiet with the band as of late – what have you been up to? Kevin Flynn: We’re working on the songs for our first full-length album. We’ve also got a show on New Year’s Eve we’re doing with the Tossers and Flatfoot 56 – so we’re practicing for that show, as well. KF: You’ve done two EPs, what made you guys decide to do a full-length? KF: I prefer doing EPs myself, but we collectively thought it was about time to do one. And since we haven’t done a recording in over a year, we’d figure we had enough material gathered. KF: When do you think it will be released? KF: Best case scenario, St. Patrick’s Day. Most likely, it will be sometime in the spring. KF: Tell me about the songs you’re going to have on there? KF: Some of the songs we’ve been playing out live. We’ve got “Five Weeks, Five Days” which is about going through Lent, there’s an instrumental called, “The Broken Pavement of Avondale.” “Pope of the Windy City…” KF: That was on your live album. KF: Right. Then there’s “I Love Whiskey,” and a song we’re working on right now called “Finnegan’s Communion,” and some others. KF: Is there any sort of theme to this album? KF: Not in particular – it’s really just about our growing and maturing with our music and songwriting. There’s songs about Chicago, being a Catholic, old Mayor Daley, whiskey… KF: Do you have a favorite of the bunch? KF: There’s a newer song called “The Road.” It’s about a person coming to terms with a life that isn’t normal or set-in-stone. When you don’t follow the path in life that has already been paved by others, things can be very difficult. The world is set up for those who go in a specific direction in life. When you don’t go that way, the world can be confusing and difficult. KF: Is the song about you? KF: I ain’t f***ing tellin’ you that! KF: How does the songwriting process take place within the band? KF: I bring a song in and we all work on it. The Avondale Ramblers are the pro’s pros. They’re all excellent to work songs out with. |
